Queen Elizabeth's Wedding Cake Auction

Last year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Sixty-five years of wedded bliss is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but managing to preserve a piece of cake for that long may just be even more remarkable.

Earlier this week, a piece of the Queen and Duke's wedding cake was auctioned off for £560 ($840.95 at today's exchange rate). The cake had been preserved in a tin marked to commemorate the event.

The original wedding cake weighed in at a staggaring 500 pounds, contained ingredients from 10,000 miles away (the Australian Girl Guides had donated ingredients), and served 2,000 guests.

However, when a piece of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding cake was auctioned off last year, it went for £1,917 (roughly $2878.76 at today's rate).

Swiss Wedding Bells

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton), along with Prince Harry, have arrived in Switzerland to attend the wedding of family friend (and professional polo player) Mark Tomlinson to Olympic Gold Medalist (dressage) Laura Bechtolsheimer

After a breakfast with the other guests,  Wills and Harry hit the slopes while Kate - bearing in mind her pregnancy - walked back to the hotel with some friends. For readers who are interested, it appears Kate was wearing her LK Bennett Darwin Jacket.

Yesterday there was a lot of speculation  as to whether or not Kate and Harry would be joining William for the wedding festivities, as only William was seen taking a flight out of Manchester. It's likely that Kate flew out of London with Harry.

Prince Harry's presence in Switzerland indicates that he may be skipping the wedding of Sam Branson and Isabella Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe (who uses the stage name Isabella Calthorpe) on March 8 in Africa. Sam is a family friend of the British royals, while Isabella is the older sister of Cressida Bonas, Harry's rumored girlfriend. It's thought that Harry will be returning to work upon his return from Switzerland, and sources close to The Prince say he will not be headed back to Africa.

Info Post: British Nobility // The Peerage

Here’s the info post on the British system of nobility I’ve been promising you all. It started as a brief history and some general information and then just… got out of hand. I had been working on it for a couple of weeks and then intended to stop and come back to it to clean it up, but when I started working on it again it started getting out of hand… again. So - here it is. I kind of just… ended it. So if you’ve got specific questions, please feel free to ask.

{PS: Read at your own risk. It’s about 5 pages, double spaced. And no, you can’t use it for your History research papers. But I did cite two really good sources I found, although the majority of my sources were just Wikipedia searches and so I left all but one of them off.}
Feudal Nobility
Prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066, England existed in a series of assorted tribes (Saxon, Welsh, Roman-British, Scottish, and some smaller denominations) all loosely organized under one elected[i] king.
Essentially, any man could – at this point – elevate his status by acquiring more land and support than another. Once a landowner reached an elevated status, he would begin conferring items of value to those lower to him, in order to assure their loyalty. In exchange for a share of the farmers’ crops, the chieftain would provide them with rare spices, or precious metals for them to build or trade with. Thus, the status of chieftain had more to do with one’s own volition and motivation, rather than being any specific reward from a king or government.
However, those who were close with the king were also typically living the life of a noble, as their relationship with the king made those in the lower echelons of society gravitate toward them in hope of protection and reward, and they were – undoubtedly – given favors by the kings on occasion for their service or friendship. And, since the position of King, at the time, was an appointed position, rather than an inherited one, the kings knew that they had to keep the Earls (those he had put in place and those who were there before his reign) happy in order to prevent any uprisings that may displace them in favor of another.[ii]
This system of nobility, as you have probably already realized, is quite different than the system we know today. King William I, better known to history as William the Conqueror, brought with him from Normandy a new system of nobility. Upon conquering the Anglo-Saxon tribes, William I replaced almost every single member of the pre-existing nobility (and the clergy, for that matter) with those who were loyal to him and had followed him from Normandy. By the end of his reign, William had created 180 “honors,” and had 5,000 knights ready and willing to fight for him, augmented by native Englishmen.
Unlike the modern nobility, the earldoms bestowed on those loyal to William I and the successive kings were not heredity, nor were they considered to be a part of the nobility. Earldoms were held by those that the king favored, and could be easily revoked and re-assigned on the king’s whim. Upon the death of the title-holder, the title did not automatically get inherited by any heirs, but rather had to be bestowed to the heir or would revert to the crown.
Prior to the conquest and just after, earls ranked higher than a sheriff but were not distinguished as separate ranks than a baron. The term “baron” came from the phrase “per baroniam,” which meant that the holder of the title held it in exchange for being in the King’s service. It also meant that the barons were given land by the king, along with the title, in exchange for their services to the king. Barons were, essentially, the stepping-stone to what is today known as Parliament. In the feudal system barons had those under him that assisted him in undertaking his duties, and the barons – as the next tier down from the king – assisted the king in his administrative duties.
An earl, meanwhile, was the highest-ranking executive office within a shire, and could also be a baron if he was holding land, as at the time, being an earl was not considered being a part of the nobility. The duties of an earl within a shire were different than those of a baron (which involved serving as the king’s cabinet, and managing his own feudal estates).
In 1265, barons-by-writ began being issued, setting the foundation for the nobility as we know it today. As the feudal system began to decline, barons were created purely by favor of the king, rather than due to their land holdings, however the land was attained. Around this time, the position of sheriff absorbed most of the administrative responsibilities of an earl, and earls became a part of the noble class. When it came time for the modern class system to develop, the title of earl ranked higher than the title of baron by virtue of the fact that earls had held the highest position within a shire, rather than just within their own estates.
Modern Nobility
In most cases, titles of the peerage have existed in a linear succession until they’ve become extinct. When lines become extinct the associated titles are sometimes then re-created for another branch of the same family, or later reassigned to an entirely different family. In fact, there are very few titles that existed in the time of King Henry VIII still exist today in a singular liner path of succession, without reversion or disruption.
Today’s British system of nobility is known as the “peerage.” The peerage is broken down into sub-divisions of rank and honor, which denote the status of the title-holder. These ranks are:
  • Duke
  • Marquess
  • Earl
  • Viscount
  • Baron
The female equivalent of the above titles are, as follows:
  • Duchess
  • Marchioness
  • Countess
  • Viscountess
  • Baroness
Due to the laws of primogeniture, most titles within the peerage are passed from one male to another in a direct line of succession dictated by familial relations. Some creations of certain titles have been made with the intention of allowing the title to pass to a female, rather than having the title become extinct.
However, there are few examples of females who hold titles in their own right, and even fewer examples of woman who had titles created specifically for them. Notably, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, held the title Marchioness of Pembroke in her own right, though the title was to pass through her male line. (It may also be noted that this title was not stipulated to have to pass through a legitimate male line – presumably because it was bestowed upon her prior to her marriage to Henry, and he assumed that any sons she had would be his sons as well.)
In addition to the various ranks within the peerage there are also various ranks of the peerage itself. All titles within the Peerage of England, for example, are superior to any titles in the Peerage of Great Britain, which are superior to titles in the Peerage of The United Kingdom.  Additionally, within each title class there is an order of precedence. The Duke of Norfolk is the preeminent non-royal duke in the peerage, ranking above all over dukes. Interestingly, the Marquess of Winchester is the oldest and highest-ranking Marquess, being the only one within the Peerage of England without a higher title. However, since all other Marquesses within the Peerage of England are also dukes, it is – incidentally – also the lowest ranking Marquess.  There are two other Marquesses that do not hold dukedoms, but those are in the Peerage of Great Britain, which automatically ranks lower than the Peerage of England.
The nobility of modern times has changed regarding the scope of official responsibilities pertaining to the state/monarchy, but not in tradition. Peers, as members of the Peerage are called, are no longer expected to collect taxes, act as judge and jury of their dependents, or provide military protection of boarders.  They are, however, required to attend certain state occasions, such as coronations, dressed in their traditional coronets and robes.
Additionally, some peers, such as the Duke of Norfolk, retain ceremonial duties in relation to the monarch. The Duke of Norfolk also holds the hereditary title of Earl Marshal, which levies him with the responsibility of arranging all state funerals and coronations.[iii]

Prince Harry Has Returned

Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, has returned home from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Well - kind of. He is currently en route to the UK by way of Cyprus. But, he is safely out of Afghanistan and his tour of duty has, in fact, ended.

As part of the Ministry of Defense's agreement with the British Press, Harry held a question and answer session during his time away, which has been released with the news of his safe return. Click HERE to take a look!

The Royals Are Out In Force!

{I know I decided a while back to split the royal stuff off this blog but I want it all back in one place. I will still be super active on Tumblr, since that is quite an active community, but I enjoy posting about the royals, and so - I shall.}

Well, today has been every royal watchers delight! Not only do we have 14th in line to the throne Zara Phillips competing in the Equestrian events, but nearly her entire family showed up to cheer her on, including her cousin William (that's HRH The Duke of Cambridge to you) and his wife (and my idol) HRH Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge.

Zara's mother, Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, was also in attendance, watching from a different part of the stands.

Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall; Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge; Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge;   LOCOG Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe; Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice
After watching Zara compete, Prince William and Prince Harry went over to see Team GB compete in Men's Gymnastics, while Catherine went to get ready for a solo engagement later in the evening. The event was held Creative Industries reception at the Royal Academy of Arts in London’s Piccadilly to support the British Government’s GREAT Campaign.

The GREAT Campaign is designed to showcase the economic and cultural potential of Great Britain abroad, using both the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics as showcase pieces.

Catherine wore a dress that we first saw during the Canadian/US tour she and William took just after their wedding, a pale-grey Roksanda Ilincic stunner. This was one of my favorite dresses from that tour, and I am so happy to see it back in action!

And can you check out her hair? It looks fantastic! I love when she wears her hair back - she looks so elegant!

Duchess of Cambridge - Engagement #2

No, Catherine hasn't gotten engaged again (because that would be weird), but this morning she has undertaken her second solo engagement since marrying Prince William in April 2010.

Found this photo lots of places, including: Tumblr, The Daily Mail

According to The Daily Mail, Catherine's coat cost £369 pounds (currently on sale for £182), while her dress cost £59 at the same shop. Ironically, they wrote that the understatedness (is that a word? probably not) of both pieces meant the focus would be on her charity work, not her wardrobe... as they wrote about her wardrobe.

Although her husband, Prince William, is away on training in the Falklands, Jaqson (above) stepped into the role of Valentine perfectly, presenting Catherine with a card, flowers, and cupcake. Jaqson also told The Daily Mail that he had been practicing what he would say to Catherine - "Happy Valentine's Day Your Royal Highness. I'm sorry Prince William can't be here today."

Catherine revealed during her chat with Jaqson that William sent her a Valentine's Day card and flowers, which arrived earlier this morning.

I love how Catherine always leans down to speak with the children - she doesn't loom over them, she gets right down at eye level and is always good for a big hug!

The Duchess's First Solo Trip

HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, embarked on her first solo engagement today by paying a visit to the National Portrait Gallery, one of the organizations of which she is the patron.

As always, Catherine looked stunning. She wore a grey dress by Jesire, and paired it with black pumps,  black clutch, and a diamond bracelet. While Grazia is reporting that she had bare legs, I'm pretty sure that I can spot the sheen of her sheer nylons in the photo, and since nylons are a staple of proper British Royal Family attire, I'm going to guess she's wearing them.

What do YOU think of Catherine's look?

Moral Dilemma?

I am completely enraptured by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her sister Pippa Middleton. I can't help it. My interest in celebrities is not limited to Hollywood - I've been interested in HRH The Duchess of Cambridge since she was Kate Middleton, and well before the engagement. I remember being sad that Prince William and Catherine had broken up, and that was in 2007 - so obviously I've been following this chick for a while.

And now that Pippa is in the limelight, I feel like it's double the fun. While there aren't lots of photos of Catherine floating around, there are daily photos of Pippa - most prominently the photos that are posted of her daily walks to and from work. And Pippa has an amazing sense of style, so I feel like the daily photos are some sort of fashion inspiration.

The thing is though, while Catherine is now a public figure (being married to the future King of a country will do that to ya), Pippa isn't. She is still a private citizen, with a regular 9am to 5pm job, and she doesn't have the 24/7 security detail that her sister and brother-in-law have. In fact, Catherine has had security detail since well before her wedding, and even before her engagement, because the royal family and William wanted to protect her privacy while she was still entitled to it (as a private citizen), and that was the only way they could.

It is believed now that the royal family are beginning to become concerned with Pippa's level of notoriety. Not because they see it as a negative (if anything, public interest in Catherine and, subsequently, her sister, has helped the royal family's image), but because they are becoming concerned for her safety with some "insiders" even voicing concerns of Princess Diana-esq ending.

And here is where my dilemma comes in. I thoroughly enjoy seeing photos of Pippa every day. She has a remarkable sense of style. I am obsessed with her daily outfits and anxiously await their appearance on the internet every day. But I also feel terrible for her. It's been reported that photos surfaced of her crying in a restaurant shortly after her break-up. That is terrible. It's disgusting that someone would try to capitalize on her misery. And I am perpetuating that by posting photos of her... I'm the demographic those paparazzi are catering to. I love seeing the photos of Pippa walking to and from work every day, but sometimes I forget that it comes at a price - and that price is that a regular girl has to face a horde of cameramen every single morning, regardless of whether or not she feels like it.

Catherine signed up for it - she knew what she was getting into. The day Prince William put that ginormous sapphire on her ring finger, she kind of signed away her right to privacy. Not that she isn't entitled to have private moments, but she officially became a public figure. She is a member of the royal family - it is her job to represent the country as a whole, and to do that the country as a whole has a right to an interest in her life.  Her engagement was announced at a press conference, her wedding day was a national holiday. The royal family has a press corp (much like the President of the United States does), comprised of reporters and photographers that are with them for every single official appearance - which is essentially every day.

Pippa didn't sign up for it though. And ok ... let's be honest. The majority of the time, Pippa probably loves the attention. She is pretty much the #1 Society girl right now - getting invited to social events, fashion shows, and I'm sure cashing in on all of the promotional freebies that celebrities tend to enjoy. But she hasn't done anything to get this attention - she just happens to be the sister of the woman who dated a prince for 10 years and eventually married him.

So what do I do? Do I continue posting photos of Pippa, and following the details of her life - or do I stop and acknowledge the fact that, at the end of the day, she really is just a normal girl who should be afforded her privacy?

Prince Harry Headed to the US

Prince Harry (my future husband?) is scheduled to arrive in the US this week to participate in a 2-month training exercise with the US military.

Unfortunately, he will be heading the Arizona & California... which are no where near Massachusetts, which is entirely unfair if you ask me.

One Hit Wonder?

This summer, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge wore a gorgeous Jenny Packham gown to the ARK Gala, her first official outing post-wedding. Per usual, she looked stunning and it most certainly put Packham on the map.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge in Jenny Packham
Fast forward a couple months, and Packham has just showed her Spring 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week, and it seems to me she might be a bit of a one trick pony. Her Spring 2012 styles closely resemble the dress Catherine wore, although they have different beading designs and fabrics.

Some dresses in Packham's collection even seem to take a cue from other designers, specifically the Alexander McQueen gown that Catherine wore during her trip to LA and the BAFTA event.

The Great Debate

Obviously I'm referring to the sheer panty-hose debate.

{Please note: From here on, I will be referring to "panty-hose" as nylons, because that is what I have always called them, and the word "panty-hose" is disgusting.)

Royal protocol dictates a lot of things. And since it's been followed for the last 1000 years, it's kind of difficult to be the jerk who decides "I'm not going to follow it." As a result, the newest member of the British Royal Family - Her Royal Highness, Princess William of Wales, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, et al, has been seen out and about wearing... wait for it... sheer nylons.

So, there we have it - the newest fashion "It" girl, and her equally paparazzi plagued sister Pippa, wearing sheer nylons (some of which seem to have a little sparkle to them).

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with her husband Prince William on Canada Day

Cue the collective groan. I know, I know - they're awful. No one like wearing sheer nylons. Sure - I wear patterned black tights in the winter with dresses, but that's because it's winter - and bare legs in the winter look goofy. Sheer nylons, however, bring me back to being 6 years old and fighting with my mom over wearing them (actually, it was the early 90's, so it was always white nylons - bleh!), and then inevitably getting a run in them 5 minutes after leaving the house.

The thing is ... I don't hate the sheer nylons look. Their legs look marvelous every time they step out. In fact, I'm pretty sure their nylons give their legs a little bit of a sheen/sparkle that makes them look extra pretty (not in the picture above though), and their skin tone is always even.

Sure - it's old fashioned, but Catherine is part of the royal family. They are nothing if not old. Their protocol goes back literally 1000 years in some cases. There are rules about how they dress, act, etc. They can't be photographed eating, women can't wear open toe shoes, men must wear hats in the Royal Box at Ascot - they've probably got hundreds of these little rules. And Catherine certainly can't be the one who goes against it - she isn't even really one of them, she's a newbie!

Will I be running out to purchase a pair of sheer nylons? Probably not. I don't think they're something that I need to have in my wardrobe right now. However, if I have a function to attend and I want to make sure I look my absolute best, I might consider it to ensure that my skin tone is all even and pretty looking on my legs.

Let me know in the comments what YOU think of the sheer nylons look. Are you loving it? Hating it? Getting sick of reading about Catherine? Lay it on me!

Royal Wedding - LIVE BLOG!

Good morning everyone! It's 4:23AM EST (all times below are EST). I woke up a few minutes ago, brushed my teeth, and now I am ready!

6:12AM - The vows have started. I am done for now!

6:06AM - Catherine looks gorgeous. So does Pippa. The bridesmaids & page boys are adorable. Kate is making her way down the aisle - her walk is expected to take about 3 minutes. The music is quite... somber.

5:52AM - Catherine Middleton is getting in the car! She is preparing to leave The Goring Hotel. A quick shot of her in the car shows that she, as expected, looks GORGEOUS! The dress is long sleeved with a lace bodice, and there is a long veil!

5:47AM - The bridesmaids have left!

5:41AM - Her Majesty The Queen (wearing yellow Angela Kelley!) & HRH The Duke of Edinburgh have left Buckingham Palace and are making their way to Westminster Abbey.

5:38AM - Prince Charles & Camilla are leaving Buckingham Palace.

5:38AM - Zara Phillips is walking into Westminster. She looks phenomenal.

5:35AM - Senior members of the royal family have left Buckingham Palace, including Princess Eugenie & Princess Beatrice. The crowd is going crazy!

5:31AM - Carol & James have arrived. Both look great. This must be such a surreal day for them.

5:29AM - Members of the British Royal Family (less senior) are leaving Buckingham Palace and making their way to Westminster Abbey.

5:25AM - Carol & James Middleton are headed to Westminster Abbey.

5:21AM - Prince Harry's uniform has a loooot of ropes on it - yikes.

5:13AM - Prince William is wearing his Irish Guard uniform (red). Very nice. Prince Harry is wearing his Blues & Royals uniform. The Princes left Clarence House about 2.5 minutes late!

5:08AM - The YouTube channel  has an excellent shot of the inside of Westminster Abbey. The church is definitely starting to fill up. Some of the hats are breathtaking, and some are "meh".

5:04AM - Not really LOVING David Cameron's wife's dress, but its alright.

5:03AM - Live streaming has begun at www.youtube.com/theroyalchannel.

4:53AM - I do love parades. A lot. The marching bands are a bit small & somber for my general liking, but I'll let it slide.

4:49AM - NBC discussing the fact that there are a lot of "ex"es on the invite list. I've heard that it's British Royal tradition to invite past loves to weddings, but I don't think it would fly for me.

4:46AM - Sir Elton John & David Furnish are arriving. John notably preformed "Candle In The Wind" at Princess Diana's funeral.

4:44AM - Ben Fogle & his wife are arriving. I've switched from NBC to TLC since NBC went on commercial. His wife is super pregnant, but looks beautiful! And Ben's custom made suit is nice.

4:41AM - The Today Show is interviewing Clementine, one of Princess Diana's bridesmaids (the one in the photo below that appears to be crying).

4:36AM
Photo of Tara Palmer-Tomkinson (in the blue) arriving at Westminster Abbey.

Photo of David & Victoria Beckham arriving at Westminster Abbey.

4:35AM - Matt Lauer, Meredith Viera, and some British commentators are speculating on the dress designer. It's rumored that Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, was spotted stepping into The Goring Hotel yesterday (where Catherine is staying). This leads a lot of people to believe that Burton designed the dress.

4:31AM EST - Charles Spencer, Prince William's uncle (Princess Diana's brother) is arriving. The Spencer family will be in attendance today, rumored to be seated with Catherine's family.

4:30AM EST - NBC just reiterated the title that the Queen conferred on Prince William and Catherine

  • TRH The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge, Earl & Countess of Strathearn and Baron & Baroness of Carrickfergus
  • Catherine will officially become HRH Princess William of Wales but, due to the heavy association with Princess Diana (William's mother), that title will not be used. (Similarly, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall - William's stepmother - does not use the title Princess of Wales).
  • Tidbit - There hasn't been a Duke of Cambridge since 1981 and was created in 1801.

4:23AM EST - David & Victoria Beckham (aka Posh & Becks) arriving at Westminster Abbey! Her hat is phenomenal!

Here Comes The Bride

.... ok, so it isn't me. Unfortunately.

The event I've been waiting for since November is finally just days away - the royal wedding. And in my anticipation of the event I've found myself constantly searching for my dream wedding dress, even though I'm not so much as engaged. And - this isn't a new hobby of mine. I've pretty much known the exact dress I hope to wear one day for the last like - 10 years.

Being the completely ridiculous person that I am, I've decided that I need to post a photo of the dress/style that I one day hope to wear, so that if Kate Middleton ends up wearing a similar one on Friday morning, no one will ever accuse me of wearing a dress similar to her just because it was hers.

I am telling you all right here, right now - I've been lusting over a dress like this since middle school.

http://www.priscillaofboston.com/Designer-Bridal-Gowns-Melissa-Sweet-Style-228

And - for those of you who are interested, I will probably have some removable cap sleeve things added to the dress so that I can have my shoulders covered during the church service.  And - I think I want a longer train.

But who knows. By the time it's appropriate for me to start looking at wedding gowns, I may have completely changed my mind.

PS: I started my new job today. It was AMAZING.

Prince William & Kate Middleton FINALLY engaged

Alright so - I have a love for all things celebrity & pop culture. I also love, love, love the British royal family. No idea why, I've just always been obsessed. The Brits are so prim and proper and preppy. How could you NOT love them?

LOVE Kate's coat here.
Anyway - this morning Prince William and my idol Kate Middleton FINALLY ANNOUNCED THEIR ENGAGEMENT! Yes, that needs to be capitalized and bolded, because these two have been playing a game of "will they/won't they" with the press for the last few years.

Their story is one that every single little girl dreams of - she went to University, met the heir to the royal throne and fell in love, and now she gets to be a real life princess. It probably helped that her family, who opened their own company in 1987, are millionaires in their own right and thus she is not after him for his money (... but his title doesn't hurt).

So - congrats to the happy couple, who obviously must be responsible for the 10 hits from the UK I've gotten since moving from Wordpress to Blogger.

I really love this picture of them, dressed like
common folk.
